Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to be seen by a doctor in your clinic?
Yes most of our physicians are by referral – meaning your first appointment at our clinic is set up by either your family physician or a walk in physician. There are a few exceptions however:
Patients who need wart treatments ONLY can call directly and get an appointment with our Wart Clinic without a referral from a physician (call ☎ 204-957-0141 ext. 2) however if you need to be seen for any other dermatology condition a consult is required.
Patients who are interested in cosmetic services (not covered by Manitoba Health) can call directly and get an appointment with our cosmetic director only (call ☎ 204-957-0141 ext. 3 or email ✉ cosmetics@academyskincentre.ca).
How do I get a referral to see one of your doctors?
You can request a referral from your family physician, your nurse practitioner, a walk-in clinic physician, or another specialist you are currently seeing. That physician’s office will then contact our clinic to book your initial consult appointment.
How long will it take for me to get an appointment?
Wait times vary to be seen by a dermatologist in Winnipeg. Our two dermatologists work tirelessly to accommodate as many patients as possible and prioritize incoming patients based on the reasons they are being referred.
Can I put my name on a cancellation list?
If you are a first time patient waiting to be seen for your initial consultation appointment we can add your name to a cancellation list. However if you are seeing one of our doctors for a follow up appointment we don’t keep a cancellation list, please call our clinic to see if we’ve had any cancellations.
Is there a charge for missed appointments?
Academy Skin Centre is committed to providing exceptional care. Due to excessive wait times to see Specialists in Manitoba, we’ve implemented a No-Show Policy to ensure we make the best possible use of all our available appointments. Advance notice for cancellations gives us the opportunity to provide another patient access to more timely care. If no prior notification is received, you will be charged a $50 fee for the missed appointment.
Can I get a refill on my prescription without coming in for an appointment?
We always recommend coming in for regular appointments with the prescribing physician however you may ask your pharmacy to fax us a refill request on your current prescription. Your pharmacy will be responsible for notifying you if your physician will not renew by fax.
Can I have a cosmetic procedure / use products while I’m pregnant or nursing?
No, it’s not recommended to have procedures done and you should read all skincare product information or ask your doctor before use.
What would disqualify or prevent me from getting laser treatments done?
Significant sun exposure either 3 weeks prior or 3 weeks after treatment as it can permanently change the pigment of your skin.
If you are currently receiving UVB light therapy treatments or on any medication that is photosensitive you cannot receive treatment until you’ve stopped those or been cleared by your doctor.
Before hair removal treatments you cannot wax, sugar, pluck or had electrolysis in the area being treated for at least 1 hair growth cycle which is approximately 4-6 weeks.
If you’ve had cold sores in the past, this does not prevent you from receiving treatment however medication may be prescribed prior to treatment to ensure you don’t have an outbreak.
Is there a charge for cosmetic consultation appointments?
No, consults with our cosmetic director Lori are free however any services performed come with a charge.
Is there parking at your clinic?
Yes, we offer free patient parking on the east side of our building. There is also free parking on Academy Road and Lindsay Street.
What is your fax number?
Our clinic fax number is 204-957-0185.
